nature of light

Glimpses from the National Day of Prayer

Have you personally experienced a National Day of Prayer gathering? I would love to share with you about the uplifting prayer event that occurred on May 2nd 2024, at the Rosetree Park in Delaware County of PA. The theme of the event was:

“Lift up the Word, Light up the world!”

In years past, I have taken my two children to this location on National Day of Prayer, and we have always been blessed by them. This past May was my third time attending by myself since I have been an empty nester. I went without scheduling limitations, determined to experience all that my senses could absorb for as long as possible.

As usual, the event program consisted of many worship songs interspersed among a list of prayers lifted up by various individuals. The opening call for worship and prayer was followed by the Posting of the Colors performed by the Delaware County Sheriff’s office Honor Guards, and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The theme message and the prayers lifted up for Church, Family, Youth, Education, Businesses, Military, Government, and Entertainment Media revolved around various passages that exhorted us to lift up God’s word and light up the world.

In 2 Samuel 22:29-31, King David describes the Lord as a lamp who lights up his darkness, and acknowledges receiving His help during many battles. He lifts up God’s word and honors His ways, the only One worthy of our trust. This reminds me that when we are facing difficulties in our lives and God seems silent, we need to obey His word even more. Eventually, the darkness we are experiencing will be overcome by His light which reveals His ways and truth (Psalm 119:105)

In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus calls His followers the light of the world which can’t be hidden like a city on a hill. We are to shine and be noticed for our good works which glorify our Father in heaven. We are to protect the truth we know through His word and share it courageously. We are to be faithful till the end when the race chosen for us is finally over, and we meet Him in person.

Since our personal journey here on earth inevitably involves many trials, it is crucial that we develop a consistent prayer life and obey His word (James 1:25) at all times. How much more need is there for the people of a nation to stand covered by His banner and united for His Kingdom! How much brighter would a nation’s future be when its people repent and gather in prayer to seek His will!

Among the unique experiences that captured my attention and heart during this year’s event were the following:

  • The prayers for the Youth lifted up by an eighteen-year old with a heart for God and a love for others. Listen to his prayer

  • The dancers who moved worshipfully, adorning the stage with flowing flags and tambourines.

I am very grateful for the dedication of the volunteers who put this event together, because they love the Lord, their country and fellow beings. How comforting it was to be part of an event when our country was being covered with prayers!

I hope you too are motivated to attend your local National Day of Prayer event next year, which takes place on the second Thursday of May. You may even consider helping at an existing prayer event or starting a new one, so that we can share the Light of Christ in every neighborhood. Meanwhile, feel free to share in the comments whether you have been blessed by a recent gathering and what captured your heart the most.
